Shell GTL Performance Fluids

Shell Gas-To-Liquids (GTL) Performance Fluids offer an innovative synthetic alternative to conventional solvents and oils. These high-purity paraffinic fluids are made from natural gas and have low aromatic and naphthenic content. Due to these properties the fluids have low odor (almost odorless). The molecular structure of GTL Fluids is more stable and consistent than conventional crude oil derived fluids, and may deliver better performance in certain applications.

Product Applications

GTL Fluids can be used in various applications including Solvent Extraction for Mining Diluent, Emulsion/ANFO Explosives, Metal Working including Aluminum Cold Rolling, Polyacrylamide (PAM) Production for Water Treatment, Crop Protection, and more. The product line includes GTL G70, G80, G85, and G100 which cover a range of high flash points. All Shell GTL Performance Fluids are classified as 鈥淩eadily Biodegradable鈥 according to OECD 301F (<60% biodegradation after 28 days).

Solvent Extraction Mining Diluent

For copper-iron selectivity and excellent stripping performance, Shell GTL Performance Fluid G80 is used by mines as a solvent extraction (SX) mining diluent. GTL G80 has passed copper SX performance tests by two major extractant suppliers.

Solvent Extraction for Battery Recycling

Solvent extraction of critical metals, such as Li, Ni, Co, or Mn from electric vehicle (EV) batteries is a critical technology for processing 鈥渂lack mass鈥. Diluents with the right properties are key to maximize recovery, minimize co-extraction, decrease consumption, and reduce costs for end-users. GTL G80 shows separation factors >10,000 in the separation of Co from Ni, and benefits from a low evaporation profile, as well as low density.

"Masimo Chemicals was successful in replacing Shell's previous aromatic diluent with the Shell GTL G80. This product was used as startup for new mines as initial fills. The Shell GTL G80 was sold as an offering with additional benefits such as better performance, environmental and biodegradability. The absence of aromatics also makes the product ideal for plant operators when exposed to plant conditions.*"

Emulsion and ANFO Explosives

Shell GTL Performance Fluids G80, G85, and G100 can be used as the fuel phase with reduced droplet sizes in emulsion explosives or ANFO explosives. They provide higher blast predictability through product stability along with low aromatic content compared with fuel oil no. 2 or SN 150.

Metal Working Fluid and Aluminum Cold Rolling Oil

Shell GTL Performance Fluids are particularly suitable for use in metal cleaning, forming, working, electrical discharge machining (EDM), and rolling applications. They offer many technical benefits compared to traditional neat oils and oil emulsions. An independent laboratory study was conducted to find the suitability of Shell GTL Performance Fluid G80 as an aluminium rolling oil. Industry-standards lab tests were identified to simulate real-world, shop-floor requirements and understand the fluid鈥檚 behaviour for aluminium cold rolling applications. GTL G80 can be recommended for aluminium rolling of thin gauge and foil manufacturing.

Crop Protection Spray

Shell GTL Performance Fluids G85 and G100 can be used for neat spray oil applications as well as in combination with other ingredients when applied as a co-formulant. Due to high purity, there is low environmental impact upon use. These products are non-toxic to aquatic organisms, non-toxic to honeybees, non phyto-toxic, and have low ozone formation potential.

Polyacrylamide (PAM) Production for Water Treatment

Shell GTL Performance Fluids G85, and G100 can be used as the reaction carrier/solvent in the emulsion polymerization process for manufacturing water-soluble polymers such as polyacrylamide (PAM). They can also be used as the carrier/solvent in liquid PAM formulations.
