Environment
We seek to protect the environment, increase our reuse and recycling, make a positive contribution to biodiversity, and use water and other resources efficiently. Our activities can impact nature through discharges and emissions to the environment, and through changes to the use of land and water.
We are:
- Embedding our respect for nature into our activities, standards and business processes;
- Expanding our data reporting capabilities to help meet regulatory requirements; and
- Building employees' awareness, knowledge and skills to deepen their understanding of respecting nature.
Our approach is underpinned by the Shell Commitment and Policy on Health, Security, Safety, the Environment and Social Performance (HSSE & SP), and our Safety, Environment and Asset Management (SEAM) Standards, which are part of the Shell Performance Framework.
For more information, see Our approach to sustainability and Commitments, policies and standards.
We require our operated assets to be certified to an independent and internationally recognised standard for environmental management systems, such as ISO 14001 or equivalent, if they have significant environmental risks. At the end of 2024, 90% of our operated assets met this requirement with the remaining on track to be certified within the next year.
