Natural gas portfolio
Natural gas currently meets a quarter of the world’s energy needs. When compared to alternative fossil fuel energy sources such as coal, gas is a lower emission energy option that is available at scale and serves both the energy transition and energy security, two of the most pressing challenges facing society today.
Meeting your energy needs with natural gas

Lower carbon natural gas solutions

What role will natural gas play in the future?
Today, natural gas provides grid stability and flexibility, when there is insufficient wind or sunshine, enabling the continued growth of renewable electricity generation.
Shell supports the European Union’s energy policy, RePowerEU, which is focused on reducing energy demand, diversifying energy supply and accelerating the energy transition.
A crucial immediate step to lowering emissions is switching from coal to natural gas to generate electricity, which can reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and dramatically improve air quality.
The ongoing development of lower-carbon gases – including hydrogen and biomethane – are fundamental to Europe’s ability to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
