Heavy industry

The heavy manufacturing sector comprises businesses in steel, cement, glass, pulp & paper, and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) for heavy industries. They produce materials used in our everyday lives, for transport, shelter, and daily necessities. They also produce significant carbon emissions, either through the manufacturing process or once their equipment is in operation.

At Shell Energy, we are working with partners on their net-zero pathways and deploying renewable power and low-carbon fuels today, while planning for zero-emissions fuels such as hydrogen, along with carbon negative solutions including carbon capture and storage.

Digital technology

Technology

Finding a balance between energy security, affordability, and sustainability is one of the key challenges industries face today. Tackling it requires new ways of thinking and rapid-scale innovation. For the technology industry, with a record in driving change, this could be an opportunity: working with the energy industry, tech can help accelerate innovation on decarbonisation 鈥 both for the tech industry itself and across other sectors.

Balancing sizeable energy use 鈥 mostly electricity 鈥 with fast growth and increasing demand is a challenge further complicated across geographies. With some of the quicker wins already achieved and a significant proportion of emissions being Scope 3, solutions to increasingly complex sustainability challenges are necessary. We are partnering with the key players across the value chain to support fast, clean growth at scale. Together, we are setting our sights further to deliver disruptive transformation that will enable the energy transition for the technology sector and society as a whole.

Light industry

Businesses considered 鈥榣ight industry鈥 include companies in electronics, appliances and semiconductors, electrical equipment and machinery, industrial tools and auto components, and fast moving consumer goods (FMCG). Together, they account for significant proportion of global energy demand.

The decarbonisation of low energy heat, itself difficult to achieve economically at scale, is just one of the challenges they face on the path to net-zero emissions. Energy circularity is becoming increasingly important, as is reliability and resilience of energy supply.

At Shell Energy, we are partnering with light industry customers across different geographies to deliver tailored, cost-effective and scalable decarbonisation solutions. These include more sustainable solutions for thermal heat, power (physical, virtual, or onsite PPAs), sustainable chemicals, electric vehicle solutions, and carbon capture and storage.
