Creating a culture that supports mental health

We鈥檙e committed to making our workplaces 鈥 wherever they are in the world 鈥 environments where our people thrive. This means taking meaningful, effective steps to support mental health.

As individuals and as teams, we perform at our best when we are happy and healthy. At Shell we recognise the connection between mental health and the ability to do well at work, and we are strongly focused on ensuring our people feel supported and cared for.

There are two key aspects to supporting mental health: protecting against poor mental health and promoting good mental health. First, the resources need to be in place to support every individual who feels they need help. Second, our culture itself needs to foster mental well-being. It鈥檚 not enough to pick up the pieces when people are struggling 鈥 we want our workplace to be a fundamentally healthy environment.

What resources are in place?

A key part of our Global Mental Health Strategy is offering timely access to quality mental health support. We deliver this through our Employee Assistance Programme, which makes professional counselling services available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to everyone in the company, free of cost. Our Beating Burnout Together initiative raises awareness of the signs and risk factors of burnout and aims to reduce the stigma of reaching out early for support. Another important campaign is 鈥淚鈥檓 Not OK鈥, which encourages employees to speak out when they are having a tough time at work.

鈥淓arlier this year, I experienced burnout, and I was fortunate to have the support of my manager and access to Shell鈥檚 Employee Assistance Programme,鈥 shares Luis, who moved back to Australia with his family for work. This programme, along with the ability to take time off work and a flexible transition back to work, have allowed me to meet my targets at work while also caring for my mental health and my family. I feel genuinely supported, knowing that I work in a place where mental health is a priority.鈥

"It鈥檚 reassuring to know that there is flexibility and support for those who need to balance their work with personal well-being and family care.鈥

Culture of openness and support

Equally importantly, however, we take pride in developing an environment that supports mental well-being, along with social, physical and financial well-being. This is manifested in many different ways, from creating a safe working environment to nurturing a culture of care to flexible working. The culture of support and openness is a real, tangible aspect of working at Shell.

This sense of support is key to mental health, as Jonho discovered when he crossed the world when he changed roles.

鈥淒uring the rather difficult move from Copenhagen to Malaysia, my line manager was incredibly supportive.鈥

鈥淎s I鈥檝e progressed through the company, I have realised that it wasn鈥檛 that I got lucky with this line manager. I鈥檝e now had four different line managers, who have all demonstrated a very high level of support,.鈥 says Jonho.

After a sick leave caused by symptoms of bipolar disorder and generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), Lara was worried about coming back to work. The regional operations manager for Shell Business Operations Manila reached out to her at that time and asked: 鈥淗ow can I help you?鈥. 鈥淭hat meant so much to me!鈥, says Lara.

鈥淚 was supported without a hint of judgment. They regarded me as any other person, which is what I needed: to be treated kindly but without discrimination. They did not make me feel like I was fragile or incapable. I was seen for my capabilities, not my disability.鈥

Feeling able to ask for help is critical. At Shell we strive to reduce the stigma related to mental ill-health in a range of ways 鈥 through open conversations, local and global campaigns, communications from senior leaders, and our experience-sharing portal for employees.

Shell鈥檚 commitment to mental health is part of our DNA and is deeply rooted in company values. This holistic approach not only enhances individual well-being but also drives collective success, making Shell a place where people can truly thrive.
