Shell LINEVOL

The Shell LINEVOL庐 series is made up of high-purity, synthetic alcohols that are largely linear and have both odd and even-numbered hydrocarbon chains, ranging from C9 to C11. Shell LINEVOL alcohols are used to manufacture plasticizer molecules, such as phthalate and trimellitate esters, which are used to plasticize polymers such as poly vinyl chloride (PVC). The plasticizer molecule based on LINEVOL alcohol improve the flexibility of the polymers.

Our product range

There are two Shell LINEVOL grades: LINEVOL 911 (C9-11 alcohols) and LINEVOL 11 (C11 alcohol). They are manufactured from internal and alpha olefins using Shell Hydroformylation (SHF) technology, the same technology as we use for the Shell NEODOL detergent range of alcohols.

Plasticizers improve the softness and flexibility of the polymers into which they are incorporated.

Thanks to their unique, essentially linear structure, Shell LINEVOL alcohols enhance many desirable technical properties of the plasticizer/polymer combination such as:

  • increased UV permanence
  • low volatility
  • low temperature performance

How are Shell LINEVOL alcohols used?

Shell LINEVOL alcohols are used as intermediates to produce high quality phthalate and non-phthalate (trimellitate, adipate, terephthalate, etc.) plasticizers.

Wire and cable products

Plasticizers are used in applications such as:

  • Automotive plastic interiors (benefits include anti-fogging of windscreens and reduced cracking)
  • Wire and cable products (benefits include excellent heat aging and low volatility)
  • Vinyl film and sheet (benefits include low temperature flexibility)
  • Vinyl-coated fabrics, including those used in outdoor applications (benefits include good weathering resistance and UV stability)
