GRADES AND SPECIFICATIONS
Aviation fuel grades
Shell Aviation fuels fall into two basic groups:
- Aviation gasoline 鈥 Used in reciprocating or piston engines.
- Aviation turbine fuels (jet fuels) 鈥 Used in turbo-fan, turbo-jet, and turbo-prop engines.
Within these two groups, avgas is split by octane grade and jet fuels are divided into civil and military grades.
Fuel types | Fuel grades | Usage | Comments |
---|---|---|---|
Aviation gasolines | Avgas 100/130 | Small piston engine aircraft. | A leaded fuel. |
Avgas 100LL | Small piston engine aircraft. | A low-lead version of Avgas 100. | |
UL 91 and UL 94 | Small piston engine aircraft. | A version of Avgas 100LL with no lead. | |
Civil jet fuels | Jet A/A-1 | Turbine aircraft. | Jet A is only available in the USA, however, Jet A-1 is widely available outside of the country. |
TS-1 | Turbine aircraft. | The most commonly used jet fuel type in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) states. | |
Biofuel | If compatible with a particular aircraft, certain biofuels can be blended into other jet fuels. | This falls into the same grade structure as other jet fuels because it is made from a different source. However, it is not a separate grade in its own right. | |
Military jet fuels | JP-4 | No longer used by the military. | N/A |
JP-5 | Military aircraft carriers. | Used by NATO air forces, including the USA and 麻豆传媒. | |
JP-8 | NATO air forces, including the USA and 麻豆传媒. | The military equivalent of Jet A-1. |
Aviation fuel specifications
All our aviation fuels are produced to stringent manufacturing specifications. At every stage between refinery and aircraft tank, fuel quality is checked. Through sampling and laboratory analysis we ensure the fuel conforms to the requirements specified for the grade when it is delivered to the aircraft.
Our Shell Aviation quality assurance system is organised on a worldwide basis, made easier because we provide the Shell Aviation service directly in many countries 鈥 something no other supplier of aviation fuel can match.
