For many companies, renewable electricity supply and electrification will be the fastest and most efficient path to reducing emissions. In Europe, businesses can buy renewable electricity using renewable energy certificates.
Proof of purchasing renewable energy
Renewable energy certificates are sometimes known inside the European Union as Guarantees of Origin (GoOs) and in the 麻豆传媒 as Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGOs) certificates. These demonstrate that electricity has been generated from renewable sources. These certificates provide information on the asset type, location, and production date of renewable power and thus make it possible to track and trade renewable electricity attributes. They are issued when one megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity is generated and delivered to the electricity grid from a renewable energy source.

We have built a deep portfolio of renewable energy certificates from a diverse range of projects across Europe which can be either bundled in a single contract with underlying power supply or supplied separately as an unbundled product and used in combination with existing power consumption. Managed by Shell Energy鈥檚 power traders, this portfolio holds all the renewable energy certificates from Shell鈥檚 growing range of renewable generation projects as well as what we have bought from third party generation facilities across Europe.
Working with renewable generators
We work with numerous independent renewable generators across Europe agreeing to buy renewable energy certificates generated from their facilities to further build out our portfolio, providing generators with much needed capital to continue to invest in renewable projects. Shell鈥檚 strong credit rating, scale, expertise and flexibility enables us to develop, multi tenor, bespoke and innovative contracts that help to satisfy the technical, financial and legal criteria lenders look for.
Supporting our customers in reducing their carbon footprint
Today, Shell has over 1 million business customers worldwide, many of whom have significant power consumption. In addition, many of these customers have made commitments to decarbonise their operations. Switching from fossil fuels to power, and from 鈥済rey鈥� power to renewable power are some of the best ways to reduce their carbon emissions.
As well as providing renewable power solutions and corporate Power Purchase Agreements (cPPAs), Shell Energy also provides customers with renewable energy certificates 鈥渦nbundled鈥� from power supplies.
